Yuan Xiao 元宵 ...

The Lantern Festival, or Yuan Xiao
which occurs on the 15th day of the
first month of the Chinese Calendar year,
which marks the end of the Chinese New Year
...
There are many legends about the origin of
the Lantern festival (Yuan Xiao),
one of the legend has it that Tien Gong (天宫),
the Taoist god responsible for good fortune.
...
His birthday falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.
It is said that Tien Gong likes all types of entertainment,

Such colorful images. We have a large Asian population in the Bay Area, so we're familiar with the Lunar New Year celebrations. But your post reminds me that most of us, me included, have only a superficial knowledge of its history and meaning.
